"Classy, Elegant, Stunning and ultimately witty."
Honestly what else can you expect from this crazy little show (that won 4 Tony Awards) and this talented cast from The Production Company? But the real question that we're asking is why are all the D'ysquiths dying?
(Just a little warning, there are some spoilers ahead)
This wonderful show ran from the 27th of October to the 18th of November 2018, performed at the Arts Centre Melbourne. It follows young Monty Navarro after his mother passes, he happens to find out that he is actually part of a very wealthy family (The D'ysquiths) who own a historic manor.
Chris Ryan was such a sweet and innocent Monty, he really captivated the whole with his portayal of the young Mr Navarro. Making so difficult to not sympathise with this devilishly handsome man slowly climbing the D'ysquith family tree. Alinta Chidzey (Sibella Hallward) and Genevieve Kingsford (Pheobe D'ysquith) ha such amazing dynamic on stage, it's so lovely to see two powerful voices on stage, they truely made 'I've decided to Marry You' a stand out song in the show.
But the real star of the show has to be Mitchell Butel who played all 8 members of the D'ysquith family, from busty old women to heavy weightlifters. He deserves an acknowledgement for all those masterful quick changes, and so do the stagehands that helped pull that magic off, because it was all executed so flawlessly.
The set was so well designed, with s smaller stage built in the centre for all the main action, this is primarily where all the D'ysquith deaths occur in the show. Most of the death utilised projection to several gruesome illusions such a blood splatters and BEES! Such a clever design for an ever smarter show, with such funny gags but real emotional moments. By far the song 'Sibella' and 'Foolish to Think' had the audience so immersed as Chris filled the room with his voice, honestly not one person wasn't listening when he started singing.
If you ever get a chance to see this show, trust me is is such a fun time and a really good laugh. The Production Company really put their heart in soul into this performance bringing a their own slight changes to the production, distinguishing it from the Broadway adaption. It truely is wonderful to see a show grow and change. Keep your eyes peeled for another, mark my words this show will be back and who knows what new elements it'll bring with it.
