The Bard himself made a spectacle of theatre and created life onstage, tailored for his audience. Pop Up Globe Melbourne's 2017-2018 season honestly did just that. For many people the art of Shakespeare is regarded as draining, mind numbingly boring? This usually just stems from the lack of understanding the language.
Just as Willy-Shakes would've wanted, this company catered to their audience by throwing in references to the plebiscite, "flossing" and Touchstone's wonderfully unexpected moment with some Vegemite. I was not disappointed though as there translation of those dirty jokes were not lost (still timeless), instead they were notably highlighted in a delightfully funny way.
I was lucky enough to visit this spectacular O 5 times - seeing As You Like it, Henry V and Much Ado About Nothing. I need to honestly applaud these cast's for undertaking so many entertaining shows, braving every weather.
The addition of Phebus as a gender swap to Phebe was well suited around this time for celebration of diversity. Especially with Australia finally voting YES (about damn time!)
The Dynamic between Silvius (the marvellous George Peter Kemp) and Phebus was very amusing, pulled at the heartstrings. These guys just nailed it.
No wonder people kept coming back. It was theatre like we'd never seen it, in the round, and it felt so immersive. If every day life had even half the energy that these blokes had on stage, then I'd never want to sleep! I think we definitely need to see more theatre like this. Bring back that engagement, cause were all living for it!
